HTML essentials every serious front-end engineer must master

A focused introduction to the HTML I actually use when building modern product UIs after 20+ years in the field.

HTML is still the foundation of every product UI. Even the fanciest React or Vue app eventually becomes a tree of HTML elements. Understanding that tree deeply is the fastest way to level up as a front‑end engineer.

If you're just starting out, resources like MDN are gold. This article distills the 20% of tags and attributes you'll use 80% of the time.

Where to go next with HTML

Once you are comfortable with the core elements (headings, paragraphs, lists, links, forms and media), the next step is understanding semantics in context. Study well‑structured sites (government portals are surprisingly good examples) and inspect their markup in the browser. Notice how they use landmarks, headings and lists to create structure long before CSS is applied.

Pair that with modern resources like web.dev's HTML course and you will quickly reach the level where HTML is no longer the bottleneck, so you can focus on design, interaction and performance instead.
